Interlochen Center for the Arts presents annual Winterlochen festivalThis year’s event features a full schedule of family-friendly activities, culminating with a free performance of the 'Cinderella' ballet.

 January 6, 2023

The holiday season might be over, but on campus at Interlochen Center for the Arts, the festivities have just begun.

On Saturday, February 11, Interlochen presents the beloved annual winter festival known as Winterlochen. Food, arts-centered activities and more will make for a day of family fun.

“Winterlochen is a family-engaging experience on Interlochen’s campus that is seen once a year,” says Shelby Eppich of Interlochen Presents. “It’s exciting because there’s something for everyone.”

Featured activities include acting and animation workshops for kids, an all-ages swing dance, face painting, craft projects, a rock band instrument petting zoo, sledding, and more. At the onsite food court, attendees can enjoy offerings from popular Interlochen eateries like Bud’s, Hofbrau, Oaky’s Tavern and Mimi’s Taqueria.

Returning this year is the popular Kids Conduct, hosted by Interlochen Public Radio’s Kids Commute. In this one-of-a-kind experience, kids will take a short conducting lesson followed by the opportunity to conduct the Interlochen Arts Academy Wind Symphony.

“It makes the kids’ day, but it also makes the day for the students doing Kids Conduct. That’s a big drawing point,” says Eppich.

The afternoon will draw to a close with a free performance of the ballet Cinderella put on by the Arts Academy Dance Company.

"This version of Cinderella has all the magic that we crave from a fairy tale while capturing the essence of the story's meaning and its themes of love, resilience and fun, too,'' says Joseph Morrissey, Director of Dance at Interlochen Arts Academy. “Whether you are a seasoned balletomane or first-timer to the theatre, Cinderella is the perfect way to warm everyone’s hearts during the cold winter."

The performance will feature Morrissey’s original choreography, intricate costumes created by designers from around the world, and the ballet’s classic score by Sergei Prokofiev.

Although Interlochen is well known for its summer concerts and events, Eppich says that Winterlochen is a great opportunity to enjoy what Interlochen has to offer during the winter.

“Winterlochen is a time to engage the community and let them know that so much happens here during the school year,” she says. “It brings them into each area of art that we offer here on campus, showcasing the talent of our students.”

To view the full Winterlochen schedule of events, click here.

A community winter arts festival has taken place on the Interlochen campus for over 20 years. Programming on Feb. 12 kicked off at 11 a.m. and included printmaking, face painting by Arts Academy makeup design students, a “postcard poem” writing workshop, an animation demonstration, mural painting, sledding on “Winterlochen mountain,” swing dancing by the Interlochen Tap Dance Club accompanied by live jazz, a rock band instrument “petting zoo,” and much more. Stunning ice sculptures by Interlochen executive chef Marc Pritchard inspired smiles across campus.

At 1:30 p.m. the Traverse City West High School Drum Line led families in a parade to Corson Auditorium for a free performance of the Arts Academy Dance Division’s Romeo & Juliet. The performance features stunning scenic and costume design, original choreography by Director of Dance Joseph Morrissey, Prokofiev’s passionate score, and student dancers performing side by side with distinguished faculty members.

Interlochen and Green Lake Township to dedicate newly named J. Maddy ParkwayThe Green Lake Township Board of Trustees voted to name the 2.5-mile stretch of M-137 that borders the Interlochen campus in honor of pioneering arts educator Joseph E. Maddy, who founded Interlochen Arts Camp in 1928.

 September 14, 2021

Interlochen Center for the Arts President Trey Devey and Green Lake Township Supervisor Marvin Radtke Jr. invite community members to celebrate the newly named J. Maddy Parkway at a brief dedication ceremony on September 24. Leaders and community members of Green Lake Township will be joined by Interlochen students, alumni, and administrators.

Earlier this year, the Green Lake Township Board of Trustees voted to name the township’s 2.5-mile stretch of M-137 J. Maddy Parkway in honor of the pioneering music educator Joseph E. Maddy, who founded Interlochen Arts Camp in 1928.

For over 90 years Interlochen Center for the Arts and Green Lake Township have worked together to enrich the cultural and economic vitality of the region. Each year, Interlochen draws over 130,000 patrons to the area through its concerts and presentations. Interlochen participates actively in Green Lake Township civic life through the Downtown Development Authority and the Green Lake Township Planning Commission. Interlochen also cofunds a full-time community police officer dedicated to Green Lake Township, and donates 50 percent of its farm-fresh organic produce to the local food pantry at Redeemer Lutheran Church of Interlochen, among many other local initiatives.

Under the leadership of the pioneering arts leader Joseph E. Maddy, the National Music Camp (the precursor to Interlochen Arts Camp) grew from welcoming 115 students from across the country in 1928 to more than 1,000 young artists from around the world in 1966, with its flagship orchestra performing at such venues as the White House and Carnegie Hall. Among his many accomplishments, Maddy began broadcasting Interlochen concerts on national radio networks in the 1930s and opened Interlochen Arts Academy in 1962. He is widely credited with making music a regular part of the American school curriculum and fostering the growth of school orchestras.

Green Lake Township, which was organized in 1883, is located in the western part of Grand Traverse County and is bounded by Long Lake Township to the north, Blair Township to the east, Grant Township to the south, and Inland Township (in Benzie County) to the west. Its commercial and population center is the Village of Interlochen, located along M-137 just south of U.S. 31.

The dedication ceremony will take place at noon on Friday, September 24, in the field adjacent to the iconic J. Maddy Parkway Crosswalk on the Interlochen campus. (Guests can park in the lot near Interlochen Public Radio.)

Classical IPR and Traverse Area District Library to offer free monthly classical music program for all ages Beginning Sept. 12, the new series will take place every second Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room of the Traverse Area District Library's main library.

 August 16, 2021

This fall Classical IPR and the Traverse Area District Library (TADL) will launch a new partnership as part of an initiative to bring more classical music into the local community. The new series will take place every second Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room of TADL’s main library on Woodmere Ave. Classical IPR will offer free music-related programming for all ages, with a different offering each month.

The first program kicks off on September 12 with a classical open mic event featuring live music performed by community members. Future programs include screenings of operas or musicals with expert guidance from IPR hosts, lectures from IPR hosts on topics related to classical music, and classical music trivia sessions.

"Classical music doesn't just happen in the concert hall or in recordings on the radio,” said IPR Music Director Amanda Sewell. “It's alive, present, and fun, and we're trying to help people encounter and get to know classical music in lots of different ways.”

Library Director Michele P. Howard is already looking forward to the first program. “We couldn’t be more pleased to partner with IPR on this initiative. I know many patrons have fond memories of music at the library and we hope this series will create wonderful new memories.”

The new partnership is just one of Classical IPR’s many recent initiatives to engage listeners across northern Michigan with classical music. Most recently, the Sound Garden Quintet, IPR’s first ensemble in residence, performed free concerts throughout the summer at unexpected places in the Grand Traverse area, challenging the boundaries of where and to whom classical music belongs. Other outreach efforts include a partnership with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and the Sara Hardy Farmers Market, in which musicians affiliated with Classical IPR and the TSO present live music on Wednesday mornings; and Classical IPR’s award-winning program Kids Commute, which introduces young people to classical music through fun weekly themes, showing that classical music isn’t fancy—it’s just music.

About Classical IPR
Classical IPR presents quality classical music with news updates from National Public Radio and local reports, and also broadcasts outstanding musical performances from Interlochen and around the world. Classical IPR can be heard in more than 20 counties, from well above the Mackinac Bridge south to Big Rapids, and from Michigan’s west coast to Roscommon.

About the Traverse Area District Library
TADL provides dynamic resources and innovative services to stimulate intellectual curiosity, facilitate lifelong learning, promote literacy, and nurture personal enrichment. Circulating over 1,000,000 items each year, TADL provides a wide variety of services, including a broad collection of books, digital streaming and downloads, public computers, free WiFi, a Talking Book Library, and free programming for all ages.
OnHappenings /sites/default/files/styles/hero/public/2021-08/Sound_Garden_2021_group.jpg?itok=X7cSZhpC

More than 800 grade-school children and teachers from eleven Traverse City Area schools travelled to Corson Auditorium on the Interlochen Center for the Arts campus on Thursday, February 13, for a free matinee performance of The Sleeping Beauty by the Interlochen Arts Academy Dance Company.

"We are thrilled to welcome so many local school children to the Interlochen campus for this magical performance," said Camille Colatosti, Provost of Interlochen Center for the Arts. "We hope this will be the first of many times that they take part in our enriching programs and performances."

Based on the classic tale by the Brothers Grimm, The Sleeping Beauty tells the story of a princess doomed to a 100-year slumber. A century later, Prince Florimund dreams of the sleeping princess and embarks on a quest to save her from the evil fairy, Carabosse.

The Interlochen Arts Academy Dance Company's breathtaking production features intricate, hand-stitched costumes, captivating scenic design, choreography inspired by Marius Petipa's 1890 production, and Tchaikovsky's timeless score brought to life by the Arts Academy Orchestra.

Interlochen staff created an original curriculum guide about The Sleeping Beauty, with insights on the historical, social, and cultural aspects of the production. The guide was shared with all participating teachers in December so that they could prepare students for the performance. Kids Commute, Interlochen Public Radio's popular weekday classical music program, featured music from the ballet this week to further highlight the performance.

Participating schools included the Old Mission Peninsula School, the Pathfinder School, the Children's House, Traverse City Christian School, Cherry Knoll Elementary, Eastern Elementary, Long Lake Elementary, Silver Lake Elementary, Montessori at Glenn Loomis, Traverse Heights Elementary, and Frankfort Elementary.

Upcoming performances of The Sleeping Beauty will take place Thursday, Feb. 13, and Friday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a free performance on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m., as part of Winterlochen, Interlochen's family-friendly festival featuring arts exploration and creative fun for children of all ages. (No tickets are needed for the Feb. 15 performance.) The production will travel to the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor on Feb. 28, with a matinee performance for Petoskey area sixth graders, and to Midland Center for the Arts on April 24.
